These dogs and puppies are available for adoption at the CAAWS building from 11:00am to 3:00pm on Saturday.  Several of these dogs can be seen at Petsmart during the same time, so if you are interested in somebody below, email to find out if they will be at the building or Petsmart.
Our animals can also be seen at http://www.petfinder.com/
Potential Adopters
If interested in a particular animal, please email caawsmail@yahoo.com with your questions. Due to the large volume of calls that CAAWS receives on a daily basis and limited volunteer hours available, it is nearly impossible to return all calls. Email is the easiest and quickest way to reach us. The majority of our volunteers work or attend school full time and are unable to return calls during their work day, leaving very few evening hours available for all call returns. Thank you for your consideration.

 Ace
Ace, yep, that's me, the, highest card possible in the deck. Unless of course you are playing Go Fish. But who likes to fish? Oh yeah, labs love the water, and I am no exception. I'm trying out for the swim team this coming summer. I am a male lab born approximately 10/06. I am up to date on shots, have been neutered, tested negative for heartworms and weigh approximately 65 lbs. My foster mom says that I am a cuddly fellow. But, don't let my cuteness be mistaken for being a pushover. I seem to be a bit of an alpha male, so if you have other fur-babies, they will need to be submissive.
Also, I'm a bit stingy with my food and treats, so I might not do well in a home with small children in case they try to put their hands in my food. Guess this comes from not having a supply of kibble when I was on my own and now that it is provided on a daily basis, I'm very protective of it. Speaking of when I was on my own, I seem to have been target practice for someone, because when foster mom found me I had been shot in my hip. I am okay now, but because of this senseless act of cruelty, I walk with a limp in my step (I call it my "strut"). Do not worry, I can still keep time with anyone.
To learn more about me,  send me an email to caawsmail@yahoo.com to schedule a visit.
Buddie2
Do not think for one minute that just because my name is Buddie 2 that I play second fiddle. It is just because foster mom already had a black lab named Buddy and I followed them home one day from a walk (right into the backyard) as if I were Buddy's shadow, so I became Buddie 2. I had been hanging around in the neighborhood for quite some time trying to pick the perfect place to stay, and it seems I hit the jackpot. This family already fostered dogs my size and with the permanent residents and fosters already there, I made number 7. Quite a large number, but foster mom said I was too handsome and sweet to not foster me while waiting on my forever home. I am yellow Lab mix born approximately 12/06. I am now up to date on shots, have been neutered and tested negative for heartworms.
I get along great with female and male dogs and am respectful of cats inside at my foster home. I would probably chase a cat if seen outside. I walk gently on a leash, am housebroken and already know "SIT" and "COME". I am very gentle when licking foster moms 15 month old granddaughter, but am also very athletic and love to go running and hiking. I sleep quietly all night long and am an all around great guy to have around the house.
Blackie
Blackie and his siblings were rescued by a good Samaritan and CAAWS is assisting her in finding them good homes. These guys' mom was a feral stray and their kind rescuer just couldn't bear to see them living all alone fending for their selves. They were born about 09/05/07. We are not sure what these babies are mixed with, mom was a lab mix. One thing is for sure though these babies are going to be BIG dogs at 10 weeks old they were weighing close to 30lbs!!! Blackie will be neutered prior to adoption. My foster mom says I'm the biggest of the litter and I sometimes act like it. I love play fighting with my brothers. I'm not very fond of water, like my siblings are.

Minnie
Breed: Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix
Weight: @ 14 lbs. (full grown)
DOB: @ 7/02
Up to date on shots
Heartworm Negative.

Minnie is a shy little girl who will require a home that can be understanding of her insecurities. She opens up pretty quickly when she knows it is ok to trust. Due to her shyness, Minnie would not be good around small children. She is in a foster home with several other dogs (male and female) and fits right in and she walks well on a leash for her foster dad. If you look into Minnie's eyes, they tell a story of sadness, uncertainness and longing. Adopt Minnie and put the twinkle in her eyes that we at CAAWS know is waiting to come out.

Mickey
A poem to give you an insight on Mickeys personality: [A faithful dog who will play with you and laugh with you or cry, He will gladly starve to stay with you and never ask you why, And if you're feeling out of sorts, He will understand, He will watch you with his soulful eyes, and even lick your hand, When everything is said and done, this really isn't odd, For when you spell "Dog" backwards, you get the name of "God".] Mickey is a VERY shy male Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix born approximately 7/02. He is up to date on shots, neutered and completed heartworm treatment 11/07.
His new owners will need to understand that his life has not been a great one and give him the time and space he needs to trust them. He came from a home with many other pets, and even though he had food and water, he choose not to fight for attention, so never got any. He has become extremely close to his foster dad which shows us that he can and will love. Mickey gets along with other dogs, but due to his fearfulness, he will only be adopted to an all adult home. If you have ever wanted unconditional love, give Mickey a shot and he will never leave your side.

Cane
Now Cane, a male Husky mix will perform a disappearing/reappearing act. Watch closely and I will disappear right before your eyes. Allakhazam! I know your amazed, but this is just one of my many talents that I possess.
There are three steps to this trick:
The 1st was me vanishing before your eyes. My part is done.
The 2nd is for you to fill out an application on me and be spectacular enough to adopt me.
Now for part 3, you will return home and I will appear at your house which is where I am assuming will be my new forever home. Thanks to everyone who made this magic act a success, I could not have done it without you all. I was born approximately 10/05. I am up to date on shots, neutered and heartworm positive. If you have a crate where I can be kept quiet during treatment and you would like to see me through that, CAAWS will pay for us to get healthy and happy together. Somewhat true to Cane's profile, he is somewhat of a magician/escape artist. He will need at least a 6 foot fence to keep his curious nature at home. He is a very good natured guy that loves attention and to be petted and loved on. He gets along well with other dogs and people. Come by the shelter and see if Cane can work his magic and make you fall in love with him like the CAAWS volunteers have.

Lil Bit
Brace yourself for Lil Bit's story. Lil Bit and his brother (already adopted) were boarded at a local vet's  office while their previous owners "supposedly" went on vacation. Turns out, they weren't going on vacation after all. They never planned on picking up poor Lil Bit and his brother. After many attempts to get in touch with the owners, it was decided that the best thing for them was to come into the CAAWS program and get a new family. One that would never board them at a vet's office and not return. We at CAAWS are big believers in "everything happens for a reason". Well, Lil Bit's brother is already adopted to a great home and Lil Bit is being fostered (already living a life he had never known before). He is a male Schnauzer born approximately 7/96. He is up to date on shots, neutered and heartworm negative. Lil Bit cannot go to a home with small children due to his size and age, but if there is any adult(s) out there who is/are looking for their next child, give a thought to letting Lil Bit be it. He is housetrained and good with other dogs, but pretty much just likes to lounge the day away. Do you need a tv companion?

Nelson
Hi, I am Nelson Mandela, the 11th President of South Africa between the years 1994-1999.  OOPS, wrong Nelson.  Let us start over.  Hi, I am Nelson, a male Rat Terrier/Blue Heeler mix born approximately 8/05.  I am up to date on shots, have been neutered and tested negative for heartworms.  I am yet another victim of financial hardship.  I have recently been uprooted and had to leave the only family I have  ever known.  Everything was so routine in my life (which is a good thing for dogs).  I knew just what time breakfast and dinner would be served, which bowl was mine, what day bath day was, which of my fur siblings liked to play and which ones liked to be left alone, etc.
Now all that has changed.  The people at CAAWS asked me what I would like in my next home.  I want a family that will never ever let me go again.  One that takes me with them through the good times and bad.  If things get rough, I will eat less.  When times are tight, I do not need toys, I appreciate special bonding time between owner and pet.  I get along with other dogs, but am scared and nervous around children.  Since I have never really learned to walk on a leash, I will need a fenced in back yard when I am out doing my business.  Other than these things, I just want someone to love and love me back.

Scruffy
Can you guess what my name is? Go ahead, try. No, it is not Winn Dixie. That is a stupid name - my name is "Scruffy". I am a male terrier mix born approximately 10/06. I am up to date on shots, neutered and heartworm negative. Someone got me as a cute little puppy and then as I got older and they thought I was not as cute any more,
they did not have time for me, they just got tired of taking care of me so they tied me to a tree with no shelter. My foster mom came to my rescue and tells me all the time that there is a family out there just waiting to scoop me up and treat me princely. Since I have been in my foster home, I am 99% housebroken to a doggy door. I am a very active dog that gets bored very easily, so other dogs would be a plus. I walk well on a leash and am ready to move.

Nikki
Hi, I am Nikki, a female Finnish Spitz/Lab mix born approximately 2/05. I am 18 inches tall and weigh approximately 30 lbs. I am up to date on shots, have been spayed and tested positive for heartworms. Don't let that scare you off, CAAWS will pay for my treatment. I was found in a neighborhood by my foster family and after trying numerous avenues to find my previous owners, it was decided that they probably did not care about me or want me. If someone would have asked me, I could have told them that, hence the heartworms. My foster mom and dad have already learned that I am athletic and agile with keen senses, a curious nature, and an intelligent mind (no dummy here). I have a naturally sweet and playful disposition and my spirits are always high. I love getting my tummy rubbed and my tail never stops wagging (a plus when the furniture needs dusting). Foster mom and dad tell me that I can be stubborn at times, but this princess has tasted the good life and I am not going back.

  Benson
Benson has had a really bad life thus far. We are not  quite sure why at this stage of his life, he ended up at animal control, but when he was finally adopted by a nice lady, she was not able to keep him because her apartment complex did not allow dogs. Also, unbeknownst to everyone, he had bladder stones and an infection that was very painful to him. But since entering CAAWS, things are now looking up for Benson. His infection has cleared up and he is scheduled for surgery (Tuesday, 7/10) to remove those nasty bladder stones and should feel great after that. He was born approximately July 1998 and has lost most of his hearing. He is up to date on shots, neutered, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. Benson is now in a foster home where he is finally getting the love and attention he deserves.  He is a great example of an appreciative rescue and will follow his foster mom and dads every step around the house. That is when he is not lounging on the sofa or in the bed. Benson is ready to start his life over (FOR THE LAST TIME). He is very loyal, sweet, gentle (does not bark), is almost housetrained (if he is not asked to hold it too long) and is going to be a great addition to his new forever home. This will need to be a settled couple/person with no children that is ready and willing to share their life with a senior that will act as if you hung the moon. He LOVES to be petted and have his ears rubbed. He does not mind other dogs his size, but is definitely more focused on the humans in the house. Want a man that will follow you around, not dart every time the door is opened and will love you like he has never had his heart broken? Then look no further, because Benson is here.

  Keenan
Studies show that owning a pet can dramatically reduce stress levels, lower blood pressure and ward off depression. So the way I look at it, you can make numerous visits to several different types of doctors trying to figure out if you are stressed and need Valium, have high blood pressure and need a Beta-blocker or are depressed and need an anti-depressant. OR, you can pay $95.00 for me. Which will it be? I myself am a little stressed and wish I had money to purchase a pet. My previous mom had to give me up because she was having financial problems of her own and thought it best to find me a another home with someone who could love me. I am a male Chihuahua born approximately 8/01. Since entering CAAWS, I have been brought up to date on shots, been neutered and tested negative for heartworms. I am still a tad shaken up from losing my previous home and get scared kind of easily so a home without children would be best for me. I get along well with cats and other dogs(I tend to pretty much ignore them), since what I really love is hanging out with people
.

Cassidy
Hello! Cassidy here. I am a female Lab mix born approximately 5/03. I am up to date on shots, spayed and heartworm negative. I weigh approximately 49 lbs. I'm currently residing at a local vet's office but am looking for a new place with a little more room and some two legers to love. I would be a great addition to any family as I get along well with other dogs, cats and children. Won't you look into my eyes, see into my heart and take me home to love
Kaizer
The way I figure it, you have  3 choices. You can take what's behind door number 1, which is me, a handsome blue-eyed male Husky/Border Collie mix born 9/8/04. I am up to date on shots, neutered and heartworm negative. I am a little shy at first with humans and other animals since I have not had that many two-legged or four-legged friends, but warm up very quickly to an inviting human voice or friendly dog. I am not sure about cats, but would probably do best without them. You can take what is behind door number 2, which is just about any one of these other less fetching mutts that are not worth your love, OR you can choose door number 3, which is the double doors on your way out, not adopting anyone.  2 and 3 have always been unlucky numbers for me. Hence, the reason everyone always wants to be like me, behind door number 1.

Lilly
I am Lilly, a beagle/Australian cattle dog, mix, born approximately July of 2001.  I have been spayed, am up to date on shots and am heartworm negative.  I get along well with other dogs.
I would do best in a home without small children.  I love to go for rides in the car and I walk well on a leash.  I am approximately 35 lbs.  I am at my ideal weight.  My previous owners moved and could not keep me so I am now looking for a new home.  One that wants to receive love as well as give it.  I am a very sweet girl who will make some family very lucky.

Arwin
Howdy Yall!  The name is Arwin and I am a female Walker hound, born approximately June of 2003 and weighing approximately 50 lbs. and I want to be the queen of my house so I do not get along with other dogs.  I just do not want to share the love that I get with another dog.  Can not really blame me for that.  I have not had a lot of love before.  I am spayed, up to date on shots, and mild heartworm positive.  This is not hard to fix and CAAWS will foot the bill if you wish to adopt me now.  I am fairly laid back so I would not require a whole lot of exercise and I get along great with all humans, old or young.  I am the sweetie of the bunch and love all people.  I am looking for a home where I could possibly carry on my duties in that field.  I do not require pay, just boarding, food and of course unconditional love.  Are you in need of me as much as I am in need of you?

Denver
My name is Denver and I am a male Pit mix born approximately January of 2005. I have been from pillar to post in the last year. I was a victim of Hurricane Katrina but was rescued and brought to Lamar Dixon. A lady with the Coast Guard planned to adopt me and take me home with her to "Denver" Colorado when she returned (which I was very excited about). When she learned of the pit bill ban/euthanasia rule that is in effect in Colorado, she tried to explain this to me and we were both VERY upset. I am up to date on shots and neutered. I am heartworm positive, but for whatever lucky soul gets me, my heartworm treatment will be paid for. After what I've been through and being bounced around so much, I'm sure you can understand that I am a little shy when first meeting someone, but I come around quickly to a kind voice and loving hands. I am unsure of cats, but I am housetrained, great on a leash and love other dogs (large and small). Please look past my initial frightened, withdrawn demeanor, and know that with a little love and patience, I will trust you and can prove to be the most loyal, loving friend you've ever imagined.
Miranda
I’m Miranda, a female Lab mix born approximately 7/05. I am up to date on shots, spayed and am heartworm negative. I am a sweet loving lady who gets along well with other dogs. One thing I do need to tell you, I have quite the spring to my legs and since Labs are known for their digging ability, I will need at least a 6 foot secure fenced in yard to play in when I’m not inside napping on my bed or watching television. I’m sure this is how I ended up homeless in the first place. Too much thinking the grass was greener on the other side. I’m working on my housetraining, but with a responsible owner should have this mastered in no time. Are you my new family that wants to play fetch, give belly rubs, love me unconditionally and teach me that the grass is only green on my side of the yard?
Myles
Myles is a sweet, fun-loving, Tibetan Terrier/Shih-Tzu mix born approximately 1/06. He is up to date on shots, neutered and heartworm negative. He was picked up as a stray by a high kill animal control facility and if not for the savior who walked in to whisk him away to safety, he would have visited Rainbow Bridge a little too early in his life. Myles is a great pup with a great personality weighing approximately 15 lbs and full grown. He loves people of all ages, other dogs, toys, food, and so on and so on. One thing Myles will require is a fenced in yard to play in because he has energy to burn. He would do best with a family who had another dog for him to play with. He loves to run, play, chase, etc., but when it is time for his bedtime story, he will curl right up next to you and listen intently until he falls asleep and dreams his sweet puppy dreams. Everyone needs a man like Myles in their lives!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How big will the puppy be when it grows up?
A: A puppy generally reaches half its ideal adult weight at 4 months of age. Based on our experience, the CAAWS Counselors will have an educated guess on the final size of most puppies up for adoption. Most puppies we see end up weighing 35 to 55 pounds.

Q: Should my dog stay outside?
A: We recommend that a dog be housed inside if at all possible. A dog wishes to be maintained as part of the family unit, therefore it enjoys sleeping in the house. A dog does require at least 1-2 hours of play time outside each day.

Q: How should I potty train my dog?
A: We recommend crate training.

Top

Q: Will I know if the dog I adopt has heartworms?
A: We will disclose all medical information we have on the adopted dog that we have. We will also provide general information on the treatment of heartworms if the dog you wish to adopt is heartworm positive.

Q: Why does my dog dig?
A: Chances are your dog is bored. Give your dog plenty of supervised play time to work off his energy without getting into trouble. If the dog can not be supervised, we recommend crate training the dog.

Q: How important is breed?
A: Most all dog breeds are good family pets that love children. Mixed breeds, such as most of our adoptees, have no in-bred characteristics, but display their nature readily. If you are looking for a pure bred dog, you should learn the behavioral traits of the breed.
